Hiking Resume

(My Most Memorable Hikes)

Beaver Pond Loop - Glacier National Park, MT

This hike is located in the St Mary Valley area of Glacier National Park. It's a less-traveled trail which was a nice reprieve from other areas of the park.

It's a fairly easy hike with lots of wildflowers, open fields, wooded areas, tall grass, and the beaver pond. This hike was especially rewarding because there was a bull moose eating weeds out of the pond. He didn't mind us watching him from a distance so we got lots of cool photos.

Caprock Coulee - Theodore Roosevelt National Park, ND

This hike is located in the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. It's one of the best moderate-length trails in the park. The trail features beautiful Badlands rock formations, wildflowers, critters, and amazing views in all directions.

The great part about this trail is that its traffic is pretty low, but that's also a bad part at times because it's in great need of maintenance in some areas.

Grinnell Glacier Trail - Glacier National Park, MT

This hike is located in Glacier National Park in Montana and is one of the most spectacular hikes in the park. While the elevation gain is a bit strenuous at times it's manageable and the views are very worth it.

On this hike, you'll be rewarded with views of pristine glacial lakes, crystalline cascading waterfalls, wildflowers, the occasional critter, and stunning vistas of the surrounding peaks.

We weren't able to make it all the way to the glacier because the trail was still completely snow-covered and impassible, but still one of the best hikes we've done to date.

Maah Daah Hey Trail (CCC, Long X, and Bennett Trail Sections) - Badlands, ND

Two Short Hikes Over Two Days

Day 1: The loop from the CCC Trailhead to the Long X Trail and back to the CCC Campground (2.28 miles). We've done this short segment a few times.

Day 2: Out-and-Back from Bennett Trailhead to Maah Daah Hey Trail (3.61 miles)

Both sections are beautiful with the unique, harsh terrain of the Badlands, jagged peaks, valleys, rolling prairie, and the Missouri River. We love these shorter sections when we have our older dogs with us.

Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail - Oahu HI

This hike is located near Moanalua, Oahu, Hawaii. It features beautiful wildflowers, stunning coastal and ocean views, and is rated as difficult/strenuous. It's one of my favorite hikes to date. We didn't hike to the Haiku Stairs but to the end of the Middle Ridge Trail when the radio tower was in view.

Otokomi Lake - Glacier National Park, MT

This trail is located in the St Mary Valley/Logan Pass area of Glacier National Park. It's one of the less-traveled trails in the park. Sadly, we didn't have time to hike this entire trail but we did do a short out-and-back.

Like any trail in Glacier, there are stunning views and also plenty of wooded areas. This trail was interesting because it goes through an area that burned in 2016.

The elevation gain we experienced was slight compared to what we would have had if we completed the whole trail. We hope to finish it sometime.

Quarry Loop and Hell's Gate Trail - Banning State Park, MN

This trail is located in Banning State Park near Sandstone, Minnesota. We've hiked this park a few times. It features dramatic sandstone rock formations, the Kettle River, Wolf Creek Falls, and ruins of the Banning Sandstone Quarry that was in operation in the late 1800s into the early 1900s.

The trails throughout this park are beautiful green tunnels in the summer with scenic views of the Kettle River, Wolf Creek Falls, interesting rock formations, wildflowers, wildlife, and ruins.

This is also a great park to hike in the fall as the colors here are pretty amazing.

St. Mary Falls and Rising Sun - Glacier National Park, MT

The photo for this hike doesn't come close to capturing the beauty of this overlook of St. Mary Lake. It's one of those places you have to see for yourself to really appreciate. This is one of my favorite locations in Glacier National Park with breathtaking views in all directions. It's the perfect example of why Montana is called "Big Sky Country."

This was an easy hike around St. Mary Lake and you're rewarded the whole way with amazing views of the lake, interesting critters, and St. Mary Falls.

Yellow Birch and Manitou River Trails - George H. Crosby Manitou State Park, MN

This trail is located in Crosby Manitou State Park near Finland, Minnesota. The trail runs through old-growth woods and is a great place to see wildlife.

We've hiked this park a few times and we love it because it's a quiet backpacking park with great views and I love camping by the river.

The Manitou River trail is pretty challenging. We first hiked this trail in the rain and we didn't make it to campsite 16 as planned. It's been years now so hopefully, the trail has been improved.
